Chris Lower is a veteran restaurateur who confirmed that it was true last week Back Door BBQAlthough the closure of 315 NW 23rd St. was announced, it is unlikely to happen as fast as previously thought.
“Business has been really good. So good, we might have to keep it open for a little beyond the end of the month,”With a smile, he laughed.
Back Door, opened by Kathryn Mathis and Lower last year, announced its intention via social media that it would be closing at the end August. Lower said that it was too complicated to solve staffing issues.
“There’s plenty of demand, but it doesn’t matter if you can’t staff the restaurant,”Lower spoke Friday. “Supply line issues certainly contributed, the price of beef has skyrocketed. At the end of the day, it was a business decision. We’re going to move our staff over to some of our other places.”
Mathis and he also have co-partnerships Big Truck TacosAlso Pizzeria Gusto. The two co-founded and later sold the business. Mutt’s Amazing Hot Dogs. Lower and LaVeryl (his wife) own and operate the business. Metro Wine Bar & Bistro.
Lower indicated that he’s looking for someone to replace Lower on the Back Door Lease.
“It’s a turnkey situation with a really good lease,”He stated. “If someone wants to do barbecue, we have all the equipment they’ll need.”
Lower said that Back Door Smokehouse would be shifting over to Big Truck Tacos in support of that menu.
“Who knows, maybe we’ll do some pastrami tacos in honor of Back Door and some hot dogs from Mutt’s.”
