After two years of scaled-back events, new organizers and a new layout, and temperatures around 100 degrees during setup, some nerves were on edge as this year’s Barbecue on the River prepared to kick off.
Rich Allshouse of Buzzard Bros BBQ said that all the moving parts cause anxiety in his early years and some minor hiccups.
The event went ahead despite the responsive support of Beautiful Paducah (a new sponsor) and Paducah’s city. There was also a noticeable drop in temperature. “a banner year,”Buzzard Bros and Allshouse won the grand champ award and first place for ribs and shoulder, and overall hog circuit.
“It was great being back on the river this year,”Allshouse added.
According to him, his company could cook more than 7,000 lbs of meat per year and was able to serve about 1,500 barbecue nachos orders, which is an innovative offering for the new year.
“We just kind of strive to put out a good product, and serve the charity we’re supporting each year,”Allshouse added.
Buzzard Bros. has been supporting Community Kitchen for the past several years.
“It’s a great cause (and) we like to keep our donations local,”Allshouse added.
While the final tally hasn’t been tabulated, he said he expected the donation from this year’s event to be their biggest yet.
“It’s the biggest meat bill we’ve ever paid ahead of time,”He stated.
Vendors set up shop in Walker Hall’s parking lot, just behind the Holiday Inn.
Allshouse stated that vendors were initially able to provide some information. “minor issues”He was concerned about factors such as the power supply but also praised organizers for their responsiveness and commitment to ensuring that the event went smoothly.
“For it being the first time stepping in and taking over, (Beautiful Paducah) did a great job of working with the vendors … any little glitches that came by, they were ‘Johnny on the spot.’ ”
It featured 17 BBQ vendors as well 24 additional food and drink sellers. There was also a game area for kids and a skate park. Informational booths were set up from different local agencies.
Monday was an incontinence day for officials at Beautiful Paducah.
Allshouse thanked Community Kitchen, who volunteered their support to prepare and serve the food.
“Without them, we couldn’t do it all ourselves,”He stated.
