So after the previous Speedy Chick closed final 12 months at 1876 W. Michigan Ave. on the border of the town of Battle Creek and Bedford Township, the couple pounced on the chance to open their very own restaurant on the location.

On Saturday, Smith and Dunn will welcome clients to Holy Smoke BBQ.

“I was raised out here in Urbandale, and we just want to give back where we came from,” Smith mentioned. “Barbecue is a passion for both of us and I love to cook. Giving back, that’s what this is all about.”

In keeping with the couple, they intend to donate 5% of proceeds every month to an area charity. The primary month, they’re donating to Hope Home, a faith-based dependancy rehabilitation residence in Battle Creek.

Barbecue would be the focus of the 20-seat restaurant, which has undergone in depth inside renovations after the couple started leasing the house on the retail location subsequent to Household Greenback in September.

Open each day from 11 a.m. to eight p.m., Holy Smoke BBQ will supply dine-in and perform, with plans so as to add supply. It’s menu will embody plenty of barbecue staples similar to pulled pork and ribs, smoked hen wings, smelt, catfish, macaroni and cheese and collard greens. They provide a yard barbecue sauce and one other sauce with “Texas heat.”

“I was doing a little catering and people liked it, and word got around,” Dunn mentioned. “I kept hearing positive things, so why not do it for a living?”

Smith added that it’s surreal to be opening her personal restaurant. She will’t wait to serve her first clients.

“I’m super excited to see people taste our food and enjoy it and know that it comes from love,” Smith mentioned. “We put all of our love into making this food and people are going to smile and they are going to be full.”
