(Zorn) – It’s time to enjoy some barbecue and help protect the community. York Creek Volunteer Fire Department is hosting its annual BBQ with Live Auction. Although located in northern Guadalupe County, York Creek like all other countywide VFD’s continue to assist one another throughout the year especially during this hot, dry and dangerous summer. That’s according to Scott Robinson, York Creek assistant fire chief.
“This year’s fire season has been the most active fire season that we’ve seen since 2011 and we cover the communities of Redwood, Zorn and Staples but with the fire activity that has gone on this year – us like every other department in the state and forest service, we have been responding to other portions to help out with their incidents as well because there are just not enough trucks to go around for one incident. These trucks take quite a beating. There’s a lot of little minor damages and stuff that we have to spend some time working on and these fundraisers are actually really beneficial for us. They provide us with extra capital to be able to maintain that equipment. But it’s not just about fire trucks. We also utilize those funds to train our personnel. We send them to EMT school. We send them to the fire academy and to various other training opportunities that come up and we also have to buy equipment, supplies, gear – things like that that just coincide with the job responsibilities,”Robinson.
Robinson said that the dinner will be served Saturday afternoon. At 7 p.m., the auction will begin.
“The serving line opens up at 5 p.m. and will stay open until 7 p.m. This is all homecooked food. We will start late Friday night and start the smokers up. We do all the meat ourselves, make potato salad, beans, all the sides to go with it and then there will be a live auction. We’ve got a live band. There is stuff for kids. It’s basically a family friendly atmosphere,”Robinson.
York Creek Volunteer Fire Department is located at 9951 FM1101, Zorn. Auction items are also still being collected with proceeds going to the fire station’s operation. Email is the best way to send items to be donated [email protected]
